Friday’s Twilight Market to Celebrate Gloversville’s Past and Present

August Cover

Are you ready for Friday’s Twilight Market? We are!

August’s market is themed Glove City Celebration and will feature a Gloversville trivia booth presented by Fulton County Museum, historic walking tours, the Kid’s Chalk Art Contest presented by Downtown Gloversville Business Improvement District, live music at Castiglione Park, face painting and children’s activities at Mohawk Harvest Cooperative Market, and a producer-only farmers market.

In addition, the August 11 Twilight Market will feature the official unveiling of the Before I Die wall sponsored by Donna Panzl of Be Well with Donna – Massage Therapy, located in the Schine Building. Before I Die is a global, community informed art project that reimagines our relationship with life and each other, encouraging participants to live a more mindful existence. First created in 2000 by artist Candy Chang, the project has been presented in 76 countries and 2,000 communities. According to the project’s website: “Each wall is created by local residents who want to make a space in their community to restore perspective and share more with one another.”

A second community-informed, participatory artwork will have its debut at the August 11 event. Susy Easterly, of Easterly Woodworking and Design on Forest Street, will have two benches present for Market guests to paint. These benches are based on similar projects where community members and business owners create artistic benches for the public to enjoy. These two colorful and engaging benches will be placed along Main Street as a pilot program and will provide an eye-catching respite for shoppers and visitors downtown.

“I am overwhelmed by the community spirit shown by business owners and residents downtown,” said Jennifer Jennings, Downtown Development Specialist in Gloversville. “The Twilight Market’s success is down to the belief and hard work of our City. This month’s Glove City Celebration will be just that – a celebration of who we are and who we want to become. Projects like Donna’s and Susy’s encourage everyone to reflect on their role in making downtown a bright, fun, beautiful place to be. Their excitement and donation of talent also stand as an example that every one of us can contribute to making the place we live great.”

Twilight Market a Success Despite Rainy Forecast

July 14 Market Pic

There are wonderful things happening in downtown Gloversville and 2017 is going to put a spotlight on them like never before!

The Twilight Market season started off with a bang on Friday night in downtown Gloversville. Despite the stormy forecast, community members headed downtown to enjoy live music, fresh food, artisan goods and more. Activities were spread throughout downtown including the Farmers Market Pavilion, Micropolis Art Gallery, Mohawk Harvest Cooperative Market, and the Glove Theater.

“We are really encouraged by the amount of people that came out for the Twilight Market,” said Jennifer Jennings, Downtown Development Specialist. “The weather in August will be sunny and warm and we will be able to have the market as intended along North Main Street. “Our goal is to bring people downtown for a wonderful evening out, to walk up and down North Main Street and see our City as vibrant and fun.”

Event organizers estimate that around 450 people attended the activities across the three venues during the 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Twilight Market. Numbers are expected to increase as the Twilight Market season progresses.

“The Twilight Market highlights what makes downtown Gloversville a great place to live, work, and live,” said Ron Peters, President and CEO of Fulton County Center for Regional Growth, a key organizer of the event. “Downtown activities draw foot traffic, foot traffic draws businesses, and businesses draw residents. Events like the Twilight Market showcase Gloversville as a place people want to be and we are excited for what the future holds.”

The next Twilight Market will be held on Friday, August 11, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The theme of the August market will be Glove City Day and will feature historic walking tours, Glove City trivia, an ice cream social, the Downtown BID sponsored Kid’s Chalk Contest, live music, famers market, and more.

Event sponsors include Key Partner, Nathan Littauer Hospital, major sponsor, Fulton County Board of Realtors, and friends of the market, Fulmont Community Church, Micropolis Cooperative, Inc., NBT Bank, Patriot Federal Bank, Shannon Rose Design, and WEST & Company CPAs PC.
