Business History
Telephone Service in Fulton County has grown considerably from its beginnings in 1879 when J. S. Glen Edwards had 4 telephones installed on a line connecting his store in Glen with several nearby points.
In June of 1899 Edwards along with several prominent area citizens incorporated as the Glen Telephone Company and obtained franchises from both Gloversville and Johnstown. Soon after services were extended to Surrounding villages. in Fulton and Montgomery counties.
Important mergers and acquisitions continued to occur:
- 1904 Glen Telephone acquired the Hudson Rivcr Telephone Company.
- 1928 General Telephone Utilities acquired nearly all of the outstanding Glen Telephone stock and 75 percent of the Black River Telephone Company .
- 1935 The company was reorganized into the General Telephone Corporation or Upstate NY.
- 1979 Continental Telephone purchased the General Telephone Company of Upstate NY.
- 1994 Citizens Utilities purchased Con Tel of NY.
- 2008 Citizens Communions at ions Stockholders approved changing the corporate name to Frontier Communications Corporation at the annual meeting.
Today Frontier Communications is an S&P 500 company and is included in the Fortune 1000 list of America’s largest corporations. Why did you choose to start your business in Fulton County?
Fulton County was the mecca of the ice c ream freezer business until 2009 when Hussman relocated their business to Mexico. Frozen Parts was established m develop replacement parts which otherwise would no longer be available.
What has contributed to the longevity and success of the business?
The ability to change and adapt to both technological changes and consumer needs has been key to our success.
